Pool Table Moving
Pool Table Moving Services in Portland & Southwest Washington
Moving a pool table safely takes specialized knowledge, the right equipment, and experience handling slate tables of all sizes. NW Billiard Services has spent years perfecting the process of disassembling, transporting, and reassembling pool tables across Portland, Vancouver, Salem, and throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. Whether you're moving across town or to a new home hours away, we handle your table with the care and precision it deserves.
We move all types and sizes of pool tables, from 6-foot recreational models to 9-foot tournament tables, antique Brunswick tables to modern Golden West builds. Our process protects your investment at every step, and our flexible service area means we can reach you even if other companies won't travel that far.
How Pool Table Moving Works
Pool tables can't be moved in one piece. The weight and fragility of the slate make professional disassembly essential. Here's exactly what happens when we move your table.
Our Step-by-Step Moving Process
Disassembly at Your Current Location
We start by carefully removing the rails, pockets, and felt from your pool table. Most tables have a three-piece slate that needs to be separated. This is delicate work because slate can crack under improper handling. Each component gets wrapped in protective blankets to prevent scratches and damage during transport. This part of the process typically takes 30 to 40 minutes.
Safe Transportation
Once disassembled, all pieces are loaded into our enclosed van. The slate pieces are transported flat, never at an angle, to prevent cracking. Our climate-controlled van keeps everything dry and protected from the elements. We use professional-grade moving equipment designed specifically for heavy slate and bulky table frames. Your table rides safely whether we're going five miles or fifty.
Reassembly and Setup at Your New Location
At your new location, we reassemble the frame, install the slate, and level the playing surface with precision. Pool tables must be level within 1/100th of an inch across the entire surface for proper play. Then we reinstall the rails, pockets, and felt, finishing with a final quality check to make sure everything plays correctly. Reassembly and leveling usually take 90 minutes to 2 hours.
Total Time: Most complete moves take 3 to 4 hours from start to finish, including drive time between locations.
What Affects Pool Table Moving Costs
Pool table moving costs vary based on several factors. We believe in transparent pricing, so here's what influences the final quote.
Table Size Matters
A 6-foot table weighs significantly less than a 9-foot tournament table, and the difference shows in the labor required. Larger tables mean heavier slate (sometimes over 200 pounds per piece), more complex reassembly, and longer setup times. We price accordingly because a 9’ tournament table or a 125 year old antique require more time, care, and horsepower to get moved and installed correctly.
Stairs and Access
Stairs add complexity to any pool table move. Moving slate up or down a flight of stairs takes extra manpower and time. We also assess doorways and hallways. Narrow passages or tight corners require careful maneuvering. During the quoting process, we ask about access at both your current location and your destination so there are no surprises on moving day. Stairs, large hills, or genuinely difficult access adds time and cost to most jobs.
Distance Between Locations
Local moves within the Portland metro area are one thing, but we also serve Salem, the Oregon Coast, and Southern Oregon. Longer distances naturally affect pricing because of drive time. The good news? We're willing to travel farther than most competitors. If you need a table moved to Medford or the coast, we'll make it happen.
Current Table Condition
Is your table already disassembled, or do we need to take it apart? Do you want it fully reassembled at the new location, or just moved and set aside for storage? These details affect the scope of work. If your table needs any repairs during the process (damaged felt, worn bumpers) we can handle that too, but it's helpful to know upfront.
Our Quoting Process: We ask detailed questions before giving you a price. This isn't to make things complicated. It's to give you an accurate quote. We'd rather spend a few extra minutes on the phone than show up on moving day and discover stairs or an oversized table that wasn't accounted for. Transparent quoting means no surprise charges later.
Can You Move a Pool Table Without Professional Help?
Technically yes, but pool tables aren't like regular furniture. The average 8-foot table weighs 700 to 1,000 pounds, and most of that weight is concentrated in the slate playing surface. Moving pool tables requires more than just muscle.
What Makes Pool Table Moving Complex
Proper disassembly knowledge: Rails, pockets, and felt must come off in the right order. Remove things incorrectly and you risk damaging the cloth or bending the rails.
Slate handling expertise: Three-piece slate has to be carefully separated without chipping the edges. One wrong move can crack a piece of slate, and replacement slate is expensive and often hard to source.
Specialized tools: You'll need socket sets, staple removers, leveling equipment, and often a power drill. Most people don't have these tools sitting in their garage.
Safe transport methods: Slate must be transported flat. Tilting it during transport can cause cracks that aren't visible until you try to reassemble the table.
Precise releveling: The playing surface has to be level within 1/100th of an inch across the entire table. Without leveling experience, you'll end up with a table that doesn't play right.
We often get calls from people who started a DIY move and quickly realized the table was more complicated than expected. Sometimes they've already damaged the felt or discovered cracked slate. Professional moving protects your investment and saves you the physical strain and potential repair costs.
Adding New Felt During Your Move
If we're already moving your table, it's the perfect time to install fresh felt. We have to remove the existing cloth anyway during disassembly, so adding new felt costs less than scheduling a separate felt replacement service later.
Why Combine Services:
We're already removing and reinstalling the felt as part of the moving process, so changing the bed cloth adds minimal time. If you want the rails recovered too (which we highly recommend for a complete refresh), there's an additional charge because rail work takes longer. But doing everything during the move is still much more cost-effective than having us make a second trip just to change the felt.
It's also a great opportunity to choose a new color or upgrade to higher-quality cloth. Starting fresh in your new space with a table that looks and plays like new makes the whole move feel worthwhile. Check out our cloth guide to see your options, and let us know during the quote if you'd like new felt installed.

Types of Tables We Move
We've moved hundreds of pool tables over the years, and we've learned to handle just about every type, brand, and configuration.
All Brands and Styles:
Brunswick, Golden West, Olhausen, Legacy, Connelly, Spencer Marston—we've worked on them all. We also handle antique and vintage tables that require extra care, modern recreational tables, commercial bar-style tables, and custom or specialty builds. If it's a legitimate slate pool table, we know how to move it.
All Sizes:
6-foot tables (often called 'junior' tables), 7-foot tables (the most common home size), 8-foot tables (regulation home size), 9-foot tables (tournament and commercial size), and even 10-foot or larger snooker tables. Size affects the complexity and price, but we're equipped to handle any of them.
Slate Configurations:
Most tables have three-piece slate, which is the standard configuration we see every day. Occasionally we encounter one-piece slate tables. These are rare and require special handling because the slate can't be separated for transport. We also work with oversized slate and non-standard configurations.
If you're not sure what type of table you have, we can help you figure it out during the quoting process. Our experience across hundreds of moves means we've probably seen your table model before.
What to Expect When You Schedule
When you contact us for a moving quote, we'll ask several questions to give you accurate pricing. This might feel like a lot of questions, but each one helps us understand the scope of work and bring the right equipment.
Here's What We Need to Know:
Current table location (address and which floor it's on)
Destination location (address and floor level)
Table size—if you're not sure, we can walk you through measuring it
Table brand and model, if you know it
Are there stairs at either location?
Any narrow doorways, tight corners, or tricky access points?
Is the table currently assembled, or is it already in pieces?
Do you want it fully reassembled at the new location, or just moved and stored?
Would you like new felt installed during the move?
The more details you provide upfront, the smoother the process goes. And if you're uncertain about any of these answers, that's fine too. We'll help you figure it out.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a pool table move take?
Most moves take 3 to 4 hours from start to finish, including disassembly, transport, and reassembly. The exact timeline depends on table size, distance between locations, and whether there are stairs or access challenges.
Can I move a pool table myself?
Technically yes, but we don't recommend it. Pool tables are extremely heavy, and the slate can crack if mishandled. Improper disassembly or reassembly can also damage the frame, felt, or leveling. Professional movers have the tools and experience to do it safely and correctly.
Do you move pool tables that are already disassembled?
Absolutely. If your table is already in pieces, whether it's in storage or you started disassembling it yourself, we can transport it and reassemble it at the new location.
What if there are stairs at my location?
We move tables up and down stairs regularly. It adds time and effort, so there's an additional charge, but it's something we handle often. Just let us know about stairs when you schedule so we can plan accordingly.
Can you move a pool table to a second-floor room?
Yes, as long as the slate pieces can physically fit through doorways and up the staircase. We'll ask about access during scheduling to confirm feasibility.
Do you service areas outside Portland?
Yes. We regularly travel to Vancouver WA, Salem, the Oregon coast, and southern Oregon. If you're outside our primary service area, contact us—we're often willing to travel for the right job.
What if I want a new felt installed during the move?
We can absolutely install new cloth during a move. It's the most cost-effective time to do it since we're already disassembling and reassembling the table. Let us know when you schedule, and we'll walk you through cloth options.
How much does a pool table moving cost?
Pricing depends on table size, distance, stairs, and any additional services. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your specific move.
