Pool Table Setup and Installation in
Portland & Southwest Washington

Getting a pool table is exciting, whether it's a brand-new purchase, a used table find, or an heirloom from family. But between the crated pieces or disassembled parts and a playable table lies a process that requires precision, specialized tools, and experience.

At NW Billiard Services, professional pool table setup and installation is what we do. We serve Portland, Vancouver WA, Salem, and throughout Oregon and Washington, turning unassembled tables into perfectly level, tournament-quality playing surfaces.

If your table is already in your space and ready for assembly, or if you need help bringing it up from storage, we handle every step: frame assembly, slate leveling, cloth installation, rail attachment, and final quality checks. You get a table that plays right from day one.

What Is a Pool Table Setup?

Pool table setup is the process of taking an unassembled table and building it into a fully playable, properly leveled game surface. This service applies when:

  • You've purchased a new table that arrives in a crate or requires assembly

  • You bought a used table that needs professional installation in your home

  • Your table is in storage and you're ready to have it brought out and set up

  • The table is already in your space but disassembled and needs expert assembly

  • You're moving the table to a different room and it needs to be broken down and reassembled

Setup is different from moving (which involves transport from one location to another) and different from felt replacement (which focuses on the cloth). Setup means we work with a table that's already at its destination but needs to be assembled, leveled, and made ready for play.

Our Pool Table Setup Process

Pool table setup is technical work. Done incorrectly, you end up with unlevel playing surfaces, gaps between slate seams, improperly stretched cloth, or rails that don't sit flush. Done right, you get a table that plays like it should. Here's our process:

1. Assessment and Preparation

We start by confirming your table size, checking that all parts are present (frame, legs, slate pieces, rails, pockets, hardware), and protecting your floors and space. If anything is missing or damaged, we let you know before we begin.

2. Frame and Leg Assembly

We assemble the table's base frame and attach the legs according to the manufacturer's specifications. The frame must be square, sturdy, and properly supported. This is the foundation everything else sits on. We check and double-check alignment during this step.

3. Slate Installation

This is where expertise matters most. Pool table slate is heavy (each piece can weigh 150-250+ pounds depending on table size) and must be installed with extreme precision:

  • 3-piece slate tables (most common) require each slate to be positioned, shimmed, and leveled individually, then the seams between pieces must be aligned perfectly flush

  • 1-piece slate tables need careful positioning and leveling as a single unit

  • We use machinist-grade levels to ensure accuracy within fractions of a millimeter

Once slates are level and seams are flush, we seal the seams with beeswax or slate seam filler to create a smooth, continuous playing surface.

4. Cloth Installation

With the slate prepared, we install the cloth:

  • We stretch and attach cloth across the playing bed using the appropriate method for your table (staples, glue, or a combination)

  • Proper tension is critical. Too loose creates ripples, too tight can tear the cloth or cause it to lift later

  • We ensure the cloth is smooth, wrinkle-free, and properly aligned

If you're having us install new cloth as part of the setup (highly recommended for used tables or if current cloth is worn), this is when we put it on. If we're reusing existing cloth that was carefully removed, we inspect it for tears or damage before reinstalling.

5. Rail Installation

We attach each rail (the cushioned edges where balls bounce) to the table:

  • Rails must sit flush against the playing surface with no gaps

  • Pocket openings must be properly aligned and sized

  • We check cushion response to ensure proper ball rebound

6. Final Leveling and Quality Check

We perform a final comprehensive level check across the entire playing surface and make any needed micro-adjustments. Then we roll test balls across different areas and angles to confirm consistent, true roll in all directions.

7. Cleanup

We remove all packing materials, cardboard, protective coverings, and any debris from the installation, leaving you with a clean space and a ready-to-play table.

Timeline: Most pool table setups take 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on table size, type, and complexity. Tournament-style tables and high-end antique tables often require additional time for proper setup.

When You Need Professional Pool Table Setup

Pool table setup isn't like assembling furniture from a flat-pack kit. The precision required for proper leveling, the weight of the slate, and the skill needed for cloth installation make professional setup the smart choice. Here are the most common scenarios where you need this service:

You Just Bought a New Table

New tables typically ship partially disassembled. You'll receive the frame, slate, rails, and hardware, but assembly is rarely included. Professional setup ensures your new investment is built correctly from the start, with proper leveling that protects both playability and the table's structural integrity.

You Purchased a Used Table

Used tables almost always require complete setup at the new location. Even if the seller disassembled it carefully, you need professional installation to ensure it's level in your space and that all components are properly reassembled. This is also the ideal time to replace worn cloth if the existing felt has seen better days.

Your Table Is Coming Out of Storage

Whether you stored the table during a move, a remodel, or while preparing your game room, it needs professional setup when it's time to bring it back. We can pick up from your storage facility, transport it to your location, and complete the full installation.

You're Moving It to a Different Room

Moving a pool table from one room to another isn't as simple as sliding it across the floor—that damages both the table and your flooring. The table must be disassembled, moved, and then professionally set up in the new location. We handle this as two related services: moving and setup.

The Table Was Moved Incorrectly or Is Unlevel

If a previous mover or DIY attempt left your table unlevel or improperly assembled, we can correct it. We'll assess what needs to be done (sometimes it's a full teardown and setup, sometimes it's targeted releveling) and get your table playing right.

Why Professional Setup Matters

The difference between a properly set up pool table and one that was assembled incorrectly shows up immediately in how the table plays… and sometimes in costly damage that appears later.

Leveling Is Everything

A pool table that's off-level by even a small amount affects every shot. Balls roll in unintended directions, banking angles don't work correctly, and games feel frustrating rather than fun. Professional leveling uses precision equipment to ensure the playing surface is perfectly flat and true.

Slate Seams Must Be Perfect

On 3-piece slate tables (which is most residential tables), the seams between slate pieces must align flush with no height differences or gaps. If seams aren't perfect, balls hit bumps when crossing them, causing unpredictable rolls and affecting gameplay. We seal and smooth seams properly during setup.

Improper Installation Can Damage Your Table

DIY setup attempts or inexperienced movers commonly cause problems:

  • Cracked or chipped slate from improper handling or dropping

  • Torn cloth from over-stretching or using wrong attachment methods

  • Warped frame from uneven weight distribution or missing support

  • Dead cushions from rails forced into place incorrectly

  • Stripped bolt holes from overtightening or cross-threading

Professional setup prevents these problems. We know how to handle heavy slate safely, how much tension cloth needs, and how all the pieces fit together properly.

It Saves You Time and Frustration

Pool table setup requires specialized tools you probably don't have (machinist levels, beeswax and torch for sealing slate, proper wrenches, staple guns or adhesive depending on table type) and skills that come from experience. What takes our professionals 90 minutes to 3 hours could take first-time DIYers 6-10+ hours, with no guarantee of a level, playable result.

Pool Table Assembly Cost Factors

The cost of pool table setup depends on several variables. We believe in transparent pricing, so here's what affects the final cost:

Table Size

Larger tables require more time and effort:

  • 7-foot tables are the quickest to set up

  • 8-foot tables (the most common home size) fall in the mid-range

  • 9-foot tables (tournament size) require more time for the larger slate pieces and surface area to level

Table Type and Age

About 80-90% of residential pool tables fall under standard pricing. However, certain tables require additional time:

  • Tournament-style tables (brands like Brunswick Gold Crown, Diamond, Olhausen tournament series) are built to tighter tolerances and require extra care and time to set up correctly—sometimes 2-3 additional hours

  • Antique tables may have unique construction, delicate components, or missing/custom parts that require extra attention

  • High-end custom tables with special features or complex designs

Current Condition of the Table

If your table has existing damage (cracked slate, broken rails, deteriorated pockets), that affects the setup process. Minor issues can often be addressed during setup, but significant damage might require repair services beyond standard installation.

Stairs and Access

If we need to carry slate up or down stairs, that involves additional labor and risk management. Single-piece slate tables are especially challenging for stairs—in some cases, we cannot guarantee we'll be able to move one-piece slate up steep or narrow stairways.

Cloth Installation

Setup always includes installing cloth on the table. You have two options:

Reuse existing cloth: If your table has cloth that was carefully removed and is still in good condition, we can reinstall it. This is included in standard setup pricing. However, if the cloth tears during installation because it's old or brittle, you'll need new cloth.

Install new cloth: We can provide and install new cloth as part of setup. Adding new cloth to a setup costs extra, but it's significantly less expensive than having us come back later for a standalone felt replacement service. For used tables or any table with worn cloth, we strongly recommend doing new cloth during setup.

What's Included in Setup Service

Our pool table setup includes:

  • Complete frame and leg assembly

  • Slate installation and precision leveling

  • Slate seam sealing and smoothing

  • Cloth installation (existing or new)

  • Rail installation and alignment

  • Pocket installation or attachment

  • Final quality inspection and test rolls

  • Complete cleanup of packing materials

Cloth Options During Setup

If you're having new cloth installed as part of your setup, you have the same cloth choices available as ourfelt replacement service:

Standard (Napped) Cloth is durable, affordable, and great for recreational play. It has a slightly fuzzy texture and plays a bit slower, giving players more control.

Worsted Cloth is what you'll find on professional tournament tables—tightly woven, smooth, fast-playing, and more expensive. Serious players often consider the upgrade worth it.

Brands: We work with quality manufacturers including Championship, Simonis, and others. We only install cloth that we'd play on ourselves.

Colors: Choose from dozens of colors beyond traditional green—tournament blue, burgundy, camel, tan, black, gray, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pool Table Setup

How long does pool table setup take?

Most standard pool table setups take 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on table size. Tournament-style tables or antique tables may require additional time to ensure proper setup. We'll give you a more specific estimate when you schedule your appointment.

Do I need to be home during setup?

Yes, we recommend someone be present during setup so we can show you the completed table, answer any questions, and confirm you're satisfied with the work before we leave.

What if I'm missing parts?

We'll assess what's missing when we arrive. Common missing items (bolts, washers, pocket hardware) we can often provide. More significant missing parts (rails, leg pieces, slate) may require sourcing replacements, which could delay completion.

Can you set up any brand of pool table?

Yes. We work with all major brands (Brunswick, Olhausen, Golden West, Spencer Marston, AMF, Connelly, and many others) as well as antique tables and custom tables. Different brands have different construction methods, and we're familiar with most of them.

Should I install new cloth during setup?

We recommend it for used tables or if your current cloth is more than 5-7 years old or showing visible wear. Installing new cloth during setup costs significantly less than having us come back later for a standalone felt replacement. If your existing cloth is in good condition and was carefully removed, we can reuse it.

What if my table doesn't fit in my room?

Before setup, we can help you determine if your table size works for your space. As a general rule, you need about 5 feet of clearance on all sides of the table for comfortable cueing. If space is tight, shorter cue sticks (48" or 52" instead of standard 57-58") are an option.

Can you bring the table up from my garage or basement?

Yes. If the table parts are on the same property but need to be moved into your game room, we handle that. Stairs may involve an additional charge, and for 1-piece slate tables on steep or narrow stairs, we'll need to assess whether it's physically possible before committing.

What if the floor isn't perfectly level?

Most floors aren't perfectly level—that's normal. We level the table using shims and adjustments to the table's leg levelers. The table will be level even if the floor isn't. However, extremely unlevel floors (more than a couple inches difference across the table footprint) can make proper setup more difficult.

Do you offer any warranty on setup work?

Yes. We stand behind our work. If you experience leveling issues, cloth problems, or rail alignment issues that result from our installation, we'll come back and make it right. Normal settling over the first few weeks is expected and we address that if needed.

What should I do to maintain my newly set up table?

Brush your table regularly to remove chalk dust, cover it when not in use if possible, keep drinks and food away from the playing surface, and avoid placing anything heavy on the table. With proper care, your table will stay level and play well for years.
